One of the more common pieces of advice that people will get when it comes to breaking up, is that you should remain friends with an ex. Of course, on the surface of things, this does sound like good advice. After all, no one really wants to lose all connection with someone that they had a relationship, do they? However, is it ALWAYS a good idea to remain friends with an ex? Are there some instances where this might not be a good thing?

Of course, there are some situations where it is not a good idea. Really bad relationships can take a toll on you emotionally, so if you are coming out of a really bad relationship, then you really shouldn’t try and remain friends with your ex. Out of sight and out of mind can be a GOOD thing at times. For example, I have a friend who chose to remain friends with an ex girlfriend who cheated on him left and right.

You know what happened?

Well, this woman’s only way of interacting with guys was to be really flirty and even seductive. So, with them remaining friends, he always thought that maybe he could win her back and she would change. Of course, she did not change, and all she did was continue to string him along with hope that he would be able to date her again. He thought that things were lining up just right for him, meanwhile she was being just as promiscuous as ever.

That’s not the only kind of situation where it may not be the best ideas to remain friends with an ex. See, if your goal is to really get back together with them, then becoming their friend may make it harder for it to happen. If you are their friend, then you have to hear about their dating life. Friends talk about things like that, right?

Well, can you deal with your ex talking about other people that they are dating?

If not, then choosing to be ‘friends’ may not be a good idea for you and your situation. Just because the advice sounds good, it does not always mean that it is the path that you should choose. There is a lot of advice on how to get back with someone that will not work out well for you and your situation. You have to know which points to stick with, and which ones to pass up on.
